Wrought Iron has been used for centuries to create strong, durable and attractive structures of all shapes and sizes. Over the years, architects have made some truly remarkable creations out of the very same material we use to make our doors, gates and accessories. In this entry, we’ll look at a few of the most iconic wrought Iron structures from around the world.

The Iron Pillar of Delhi

This 1,600 year old structure is famous for its remarkable quality of construction. Scientists estimate that the pillar consists of roughly 98% wrought iron. Because it is so free from impurities, the pillar is highly corrosion resistant and has remained almost entirely intact for over a thousand years. The Iron Pillar of Delhi is a true testament to the incredible strength and durability of wrought Iron. Today, the pillar is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Indian, drawing millions of visitors each year.

The Bollman Truss Semi-Suspension Bridge

When it was constructed in 1852, this bridge on the Little Patuxent River in Maryland was the first all-metal railroad bridge in the world. Today, it has earned itself yet another distinction as the last remaining wrought iron bridge in the world. The bridge underwent an extensive restoration in 1983, and then again in 2000 after it was declared a National Historic Landmark.

The Eiffel Tower

Perhaps the most iconic wrought iron structure in the world, the Eiffel Tower was originally built by Gustave Eiffel as the centerpiece of the 1989 World’s Fair. Until the Chrylser Building was completed in 1930, it held the title of the tallest building in the world. Since it was completed, more than 250 million people have visited the tower.
